Stretch marks can be unsightly and embarrassing, as well as itchy and uncomfortable. They can show up anywhere on the body but generally they will appear in places where large amounts of fat are stored such as the belly, breasts, and buttocks. Stretch marks are caused when the skin has stretched quickly, due to factors such as weight gain or pregnancy, and there is a lack of collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin fibers are necessary to keep skin smooth and tight; when there has been a hormonal change that inhibits the production of collagen and elastin and when the skin stretches farther than it has those components to handle, the skin will tear. The result is the formation of purple or red lines on the affected are. These lines can fade over time but will not disappear without treatment. What are stretch marks? What causes them?
Stretch marks are areas of skin that have been stretched beyond the elastic recoil potential of the skin. This stretching, or tensile load, results in micro-tears in the fibrous structure of the skin. The structures that undergo micro-tears are collagen, elastin and ground substances. The most common causes of stretch marks are expansion or rapid growth of the skin. The most common causes for expansion or rapid growth of skin are pregnancy, weight loss, weight gain, pubertal growth spurts, growth of breast tissue and even from weight training with expansion of the underlying muscle (made worse by anabolic steroid use). Commonly found around the breasts, hips, thighs, arms, abdomen buttocks and back, these stretch marks can be difficult to conceal.
What is skin resurfacing?
In some instances, laser resurfacing, also known as laser peel, offers a number of advantages compared to other resurfacing techniques. These include a higher degree of precision, less bleeding and reduced post-operative discomfort. Laser resurfacing is most commonly used to minimize the appearance of fine lines, especially around the mouth and the eyes. However, it is also effective in treating facial scars or areas of uneven pigmentation. The procedure may be performed on the whole face or in specific regions. Laser resurfacing uses a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser to remove areas of damaged or wrinkled skin, layer by layer. During the procedure, the laser is carefully passed back and forth over the skin until the surgeon reaches the level that will make the wrinkle or scar less visible. In most cases, laser resurfacing is performed on an outpatient basis.
