What Causes Baby Acne?

what causes baby acne

Baby acne is more common than most people realize, although to new parents it can be quite alarming. When babies develop acne, it is often a result of an underlying issue such as a food allergy or intolerance. In less frequent cases, baby acne can be a result of congenital adrenal hyperplasia or other conditions that are linked to the endocrine system. If your baby has acne, seek out the guidance of your family physician before using any at-home remedies.

If you prefer less harsh treatments than prescription drugs for your baby, seeking medical advice from a Naturopathic Doctor may be an alternative route you’d like to explore. A Naturopathic Doctor can take a live blood cell analysis in order to determine the underlying cause of your baby’s acne.

How to respond to your baby’s acne

As a new parent, you may be wondering how to respond to your baby’s acne, in addition to what causes baby acne. The first step in managing acne is keeping your baby’s skin clean. Avoid harsh products, and do not attempt to treat your baby’s skin with acne wash for adults. This will further aggravate your child’s skin as it is far more sensitive than adult skin. Do not use any lotions as oils and chemicals can irritate the skin. Refrain from rubbing their skin with towels when drying your baby off after bath time. Gently pat their skin with a washcloth or use a gentle sweeping motion with a cloth made from the softest material. Most importantly, do not attempt to squeeze or pop your baby’s pimples. This can cause further damage to their sensitive skin.

Do we treat baby acne?

Our team at LightTouch Med Spa™ does not treat baby acne. As our acne treatments are most often laser treatments, we cannot treat infants or children. We do however treat many teenagers and adults successfully with our laser acne treatments. Although laser treatments are considered safe and have been approved by Health Canada, extensive research has only been conducted on the effects of laser treatments on adults and teenagers, due to the sensitive nature of babies and children (as well as pregnant women).

What do we specialize in treating?

At LightTouch Med Spa™ we specialize in laser acne treatments and advanced skincare treatments for adults. We are a leading medical spa in the industry and have serviced hundreds of thousands of individuals across the greater Toronto area, including Mississauga, Toronto, Markham, Milton, Oakville, and Waterloo. With fifteen years of service under our belts we are confident in our services and we pride ourselves in effectively treating individuals within protocol.

What should you do if your baby has acne?

If your baby has acne, we highly recommend booking an appointment with your family physician. Your family physician can recommend a pediatric dermatologist who specializes in this type of condition.
